BRT Driver Sentenced to Death by Hanging for Murder of Bamise Ayanwola
The Lagos High Court has sentenced Andrew Ominikoron, a former Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 22-year-old fashion designer Bamise Ayanwola.
Delivering the judgment on May 2, Justice Serifat Sonaike declared that the prosecution, led by the Lagos State Government, had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The incident occurred on February 26, 2022, along the Lekki-Ajah Conservation Expressway, where Bamise was last seen alive after boarding a BRT bus driven by the convict. He was charged with rape, conspiracy, and murder.
In her ruling, the judge stated:
> “For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon you.”
The case had sparked national outrage and calls for better safety measures for commuters, especially women, in public transport systems.
