Next of Kin Drama: Obi Cubana’s Clapback Was Necessary

Recently, social media was stirred by a bold claim made by Obi Cubana’s adopted son, who went on TikTok declaring himself the “next of kin” to the billionaire businessman. Not long after, Obi Cubana responded—subtly but firmly—by posting a photo of his biological son on Instagram with the caption: “Ancient and Modern. Eyes on the ball – AKA the next of kin.”

This sparked mixed reactions. Some called Obi Cubana “petty” for responding publicly, while others praised him for clarifying things before they got out of hand.

Here’s my take: Obi Cubana did the right thing.

If the adopted son made his claim in public, then a public response was both necessary and fair. Silence might have been mistaken for agreement—and in a family as visible and influential as Obi Cubana’s, such silence could breed confusion and future conflict.

Let’s be real: In African culture, blood still matters.

Whether we like it or not, many Africans draw a sharp line between biological and adopted children, especially when it comes to inheritance and legacy. That’s the cultural reality we live in—even if some may find it harsh or emotional.
